The sleek and sporty Stelvio SUV gives Alfa Romeo a player in the white-hot market for luxury SUVs like the Porsche Macan, Audi Q5 and Cadillac CX5.

Based on the same new lightweight ?Giorgio? architecture as Alfa?s Giulia sport sedan, Alfa claims the Stelvio embodies ?La meccanica delle emozioni," the mechanics of emotion.

A 2.9L 505-hp twin turbo V6 blasts the Stelvio from zero to 670 m.p.h. in 3.9 seconds. Stelvios with the base 280-hp 2.0L engine reach 60 m.p.h. in 5.4 seconds. A quick-shifting new eight-speed automatic transmission from supplier ZF is standard. A performance-tuned all-wheel drive system that can shift up to 60% of torque to the front wheels is standard.

The interior features a flat-bottomed Formula 1-style steering wheel with a built-in start button and other controls.

Safety features include front collision warning and automatic braking, adaptive cruise control, blind spot and lane departure alerts.

The Stelvio gets its name from a mountain pass in Northern Italy that?s famous for its switchback turns. Fiat Chrysler builds the Stelvio and Giulia in Cassino, Italy.

The Stelvio should go on sale in the first half of 2017.
